Switching From Laptop Webcam to External Webcam

External Web Camera for Laptop

Most versions of Windows will recognize a USB webcam as soon as you plug the device in. Connect your new external webcam to an available USB port on your computer and wait while Windows installs the appropriate device drivers. A bubble appears in the system tray and says "Installing new hardware" and then "Your new hardware is installed and ready to use" will appear, once the drivers have been installed.

You may want to test the camera once it's connected to make sure it gets a good picture and is aimed where you want it for videoconferencing. Most videoconferencing software provides a test mode you can use to make sure your camera, microphone and speakers are working well.

Choosing Webcam in Software

You don't have to disable your internal webcam before installing the USB webcam. In most programs, you can choose which of the two webcams to use from the software's settings. In Skype, choose "Options" and then "Tools," and click "Video Device Settings." Then choose the webcam you want to use from the drop-down list. Similar settings exist in most programs that support webcams, including Google's Hangouts and Apple's Facetime.

This is usually the way to choose a camera if you're using a Mac computer and don't want to use the default, built-in device.

Disable an Internal Webcam

To help a particular computer program like Skype or Google Voice and Video recognize your new webcam, you can disable the internal webcam through Windows. Click in the top right-hand corner of Windows and select the "Search" charm, or use the search box in thee Start Menu or taskbar, and type "device manager." When the device manager launches, expand the section beside "Imaging Devices" and then right-click on your webcam and choose "Disable."

Some software may also allow you to choose to use a webcam built into your computer or an external one. In that case, you might not need to actually disable one camera to activate another

Covering the Webcam for Security

If you're not actively using a webcam, you may want to disable it in software or physically cover it for your security. Some malware can hijack your webcam to spy on you while you're using your computer or doing other things nearby.

You can either disable the webcam using the software menu, physically cover it or both. Use opaque tape to cover the webcam or purchase a shutter to cover it if it doesn't come with one.
