TAX OFFICE: 👩‍💼👨‍💼 Work in an office? Get your head around which deductions you can (and can’t) claim this tax time.

👍 If you have to work from home, you may be able to claim a percentage of the running costs of your home office, which includes work-related phone and internet charges.

👎 You generally can’t claim the cost of rates, mortgage interest, rent and insurance if you work from home. (??)

👍 You can claim self-education expenses if your course relates directly to your current job (eg HR training for a manager).

👎 You can’t claim the cost of buying or cleaning plain clothing, even if you’re required to wear it or you only wear it for work (eg a business suit).

👍 You can claim a deduction for the cost of attending seminars and conferences, and subscribing to professional publications or associations, as long as they relate to your job.

👎 If you receive a travel allowance from your employer, this doesn’t automatically entitle you to a deduction – you still need to meet the three golden rules!

Whether you’re in business, IT, sales and marketing, law, or journalism, check out our occupation guides for more tips at https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Deductions-you-can-claim/Deductions-for-specific-industries-and-occupations/

Engine or Transmission Mount Replacement

What is the Engine Mount all about?

An engine mount, made of rubber and steel, has two purposes. One, it secures the engine and transmission to the frame of the car, and two, it absorbs the road shocks and engine vibrations so that the driver does not feel any engine movement. Transmission mounts secure the transmission. Most cars have multiple engine and transmission mounts. If one of the mounts breaks, you will feel significant engine movement (vibrations and/or shaking).

Keep in mind: Do not drive your car for too long with broken engine or transmission mounts. It can cause severe damage to the axle shafts and transmission. Some engine mounts contain oil that may leak if a mount is damaged.

  How it's done:

Identify the broken mount. Remove and replace the mount.

  Our recommendation:

Whenever you notice your engine behaving oddly, you should schedule an inspection. Engine mounts are not typically checked during general maintenance, but they’ll be one of the first things checked if you report the symptoms mentioned here. As soon as you notice your engine vibrating, feeling clunky, or being noisy, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Engine Mount?

Engine or transmission movement, with bumping or clunking noises. Loud noise when you put the car in gear. Vibration when accelerating or driving uphill. You will feel a movement in the engine compartment when driving the car. Oil leaking from damaged mount (only in case of fluid filled mounts).

 How important is this service?

Engine mounts hold your engine and transmission in place. The mounts absorb the shocks of the road and the vibration of the engine and transmission, and keep these two elements securely in place. When a mount brakes, the engine and transmission are less secure, and they’re subject to a higher amount of vibration and shock. This can cause damage to any number of vehicle components, and will also make your ride much rougher.

Withholding Payer Number (WPN)

What is a WPN?

A small number of employers with super guarantee obligations are not entitled to an ABN. However, as employing entities, these businesses will have a Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) Withholding tax obligation under Australian law. They will therefore have, or will be able to obtain, a WPN from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). The ATO has deemed that the WPN can be used by an employer as an alternative identifier for SuperStream messaging purposes where an entitlement to an ABN does not exist.
The use of a WPN is not valid for the purposes of SuperStream where an employer is entitled to an ABN.
Please contact the ATO if you have any questions requiring your entitlement to an ABN or WPN.

How can I enter my WPN?

For employers not entitled to an ABN, you may enter your WPN when registering your business within QuickSuper. You must add zeroes before the WPN to make an eleven digit number and enter the value in the ABN field. That is, an employer with:
  • An eight digit WPN would add three zeroes before their WPN e.g. 00012345678.
  • A nine digit WPN would add two zeroes before their WPN e.g. 00123456789.
