ANC or ABN

Do I need an ABN or ACN?

If you operate a business in Australia, you are required to have an Australian Business Number. However, if you have registered a company through ASIC, you will also be issued an ACN. An ACN is required by ASIC as it is used as a unique identifier for your company activities.

How many digits are there in an ACN or ABN?

An ABN is a unique 11-digit number, while an ACN is a unique 9-digit number. A company’s ABN will generally consist of their ACN with a two-digit prefix.

Are ABN and ACN numbers the same?

ACN (Australian Company Number) and ABN (Australian Business Number) are two identifying numbers that serve very different purposes. While every Australian business needs an ABN, only businesses registered as companies require an ACN.18 Jan 2021

For someone about to start up a business, or who is considering what structure is going to be most appropriate for their business needs, it’s important to understand what the two different numbers represent, how to apply for them, the difference between the two and the benefits which each can bring.

 Australian Company Numbers

This is Information Sheet 13 (INFO 13).

Every company in Australia is issued with a unique, nine-digit number when registered. This is an Australian Company Number (ACN) and must be displayed on all company documents.

  • Where the ACN must appear
  • Australian Business Number
  • Common seal
  • Where the ACN is not required

Where the ACN must appear

A company's ACN must be on all 'public documents' and 'eligible negotiable instruments'. The items on which it should appear include:

  • all documents lodged with ASIC
  • statements of account, including invoices
  • receipts (which are not machine-produced)
  • orders for goods and services
  • business letterheads
  • official company notices
  • cheques, promissory notes and bills of exchange, and
  • written advertisements making a specific offer.

A company's name and ACN must appear on the first page of any documents.

When multiple companies are on a document (eg. a letterhead), the ACN for each company must be displayed next to each company's name.

The ACN must always be clear, easily readable, and obvious as to which company it belongs to.

The ACN can be referred to by the words 'Australian Company Number', or abbreviations 'ACN' or 'A.C.N.'

Australian Business Number

If your company has an Australian Business Number (ABN), you may use the ABN in place of the ACN on documents. You must make sure that:

your ABN includes your nine digit ACN, and

the ABN is used in the same places that the ACN is used.

Wooden spoon (award)

A wooden spoon is an award that is given to an individual or team that has come last in a competition. Examples range from the academic to sporting and more frivolous events. The term is of British origin and has spread to other English-speaking countries. In most cases it is simply a colloquial term for coming last – there is no actual award given

When to reply work messages

A five- minute phone call can replace emails back and forth sometimes for several weeks - email ping pong and can be more effective.

SMS and instant messaging can be used for urgent queries.

Emails should be replied within 24 or 48 hours to be effective. You may not be able to resolve the situation straight away.

It's better to let people know where you are at rather than replying after a week. "Thanks for your inquiry. I'll look into this and get back to you within a certain time frame.'

Don't be a mirror - looking into it but never reply.

NRL

The storied history, all-time records and laws of rugby league in Australia.

With a rich history dating back to its creation in 1908, the NRL Telstra Premiership is the closest elite sporting competition in the country and the Holden State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland is Australian sport’s greatest rivalry.

The National Rugby League (known as the NRL Telstra Premiership due to sponsorship) is a professional rugby league competition in Australasia which contains clubs from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand.

Tracing its origins back to the New South Wales Rugby League, which formed in 1908, rugby league competition in Australia had gone through numerous iterations, including the 1990s Super League war,[3] by the time the NRL formed in 1998 as a joint partnership between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the News Corporation-controlled Super League.[4] The partnership was dissolved in 2012, with control of the NRL going to the re-constituted ARL, which was re-structured with an independent board of directors and renamed the Australian Rugby League Commission.

The season typically runs from March to October, with each team playing 24 matches, with the highest placed team at the end of the regular season awarded the minor premiership. This is followed by a finals series contested between the eight highest placed teams from the regular season. The season culminates in the premiership-deciding NRL Grand Final.[5] The winners play the World Club Challenge against the champions of the Super League.[6] The reigning premiers are the Penrith Panthers, having won their fifth premiership at the end of the 2023 season.
